Beings

What we put on stage and screen matters. Yet, despite the wealth of talent available, identities are often misrepresented because roles are given to those without lived experience.

BEINGS is an online directory to represent, explore, discover, and cast Aotearoa’s POC, Rainbow, and Disabled talent.

Jhana Millers

Jhana Millers is a contemporary art gallery in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington, representing artists from across Aotearoa and Australia. A gallery identity has one job: never compete with the art.

This one is bilingual at its core. The wordmark reads Jhana Millers Whare Toi Te Whanganui-a-Tara, te reo set into the name itself rather than translated beneath it. The reo isn't an accommodation in the system; it's the system.

Tom Gould

In 2023 New Zealand film director and photographer Tom Gould engaged me to create his digital brand.

This website uses a brutalist, mainframe-inspired interface to create a stark, high-impact digital presence that showcases his work with clarity and attitude.

Today Design

A UX agency that refused to look like one. Today.design hired me to translate their updated identity into a website that competes on craft rather than process. I designed an editorial-inspired system where typography and rhythm do the work that wireframes can't.

Motion Sickness

Motion Sickness are an advertising agency based in Auckland, New Zealand. They came to me for a new website, with a re-developed identity to go with it.

The result is a web experience designed to stupefy, relax, and disorientate. True to the name.

Victoria Spicer

Victoria Spicer was a set designer based in London. Off the back of a rebrand, she needed a website for an image-led, changeable body of work.

The site was designed entirely in the browser, no desktop design tools: drawn and built in the same place. It exhibited Spicer in her best colours.

Agnes Lloyd-Platt

Agnes Lloyd-Platt is a fashion and beauty photographer and filmmaker based in London.

Her signature is colour, so the website is built around nothing else: an exhibition of it, and a shot of optimism in a field that often takes itself too seriously.

Ben Pearce

Ben Pearce is a New Zealand sculptor working with wood, found objects and bronze. His art explores memory through the one past we all share: childhood.

The website follows Pearce's practice from the inside, making visible the quirks and tragedies of a mind and its recording machinery. It is Pearce the artist, rendered as Pearce the website.

Glasfurd & Walker

Glasfurd & Walker are a brand and design agency in Vancouver, Canada, founded by a strategist and a designer. They call what they do building brand worlds, mostly for restaurants, hotels, and the things people eat and drink in them.

The website takes them at their word. Each project is entered as its own world, led by a single line of story rather than a client name, with the frame kept deliberately quiet so every world holds its own atmosphere.

Pilot

Pilot are a strategic digital marketing agency based in Auckland. Following a rebrand, they needed a website that could carry the new name and win the next tier of clients.

The name set the concept. The site takes the bird's eye view: calm, ordered, everything laid out below you. A restrained typographic treatment does the persuading, signalling trust without ever saying the word.

Michael McManus

Michael McManus Architects work across Victoria from their studio in North Melbourne. In 2020 they pledged to take the practice carbon neutral, a commitment that shapes how they think about the built environment.

The website answers with an unexpected, earthy palette, a deliberate counterpoint to the polish of the architecture. Every hue is drawn from their projects: deep green for landscape, yellow for sunlight, grey as breathing space, and burnt orange for brick.

Miles Calder

Miles Calder & The Rumours were a five-piece alt-country and Americana band from New Zealand. The website opens at the summit of an American national park and descends from there. The deeper you go, the closer you get to the band.

Porter Packaging

Porter Packaging are a creative production house based in Auckland, manufacturing high-end packaging for the design industry. A market repositioning called for a new identity and website with one unforgiving audience: the designers who commission them.

A brand for people who judge brands for a living has nowhere to hide. The relaunch passed: a flood of new business, and writeups across the design press.

Marx Design

Marx are a branding and packaging design agency based in Auckland, known for idea-led work with no house formula. They came to me for a new website, and a re-developed identity along the way.

An agency without a formula shouldn't get a formulaic site. The answer was interaction: rich, playful, a little mischievous, every moment its own small idea, the way every Marx project is.

Match Artists

For twenty years Match were New Zealand's leading photographic agency. Then their photographers stopped being only photographers: motion work grew until the old name no longer fit.

Match Photographers relaunched as Match Artists, with an identity and website built to carry the wider brief. The design stays deliberately out of the way: simple, precise, and executed to the standard of the work it represents.

Patchwork Architecture

Patchwork Architecture are an architectural duo based in Wellington, New Zealand, pairing functional spaces with a utilitarian material palette.

Their website was built by their own discipline's creed: form follows function. No desktop design tools, just a working skeleton of the real content, copy and images made to work hard together until they became the design. A website built by the rules of architecture rather than the rules of the web.
